Whatcha Readin'? January 2025
In case my January book list doesn't make it very clear, I'm deep in the "magic forest animals" part of my brain lately.
In Progress:
- This Land is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving by David Silverman. Maybe about 40% through this, but my library hold lapsed. Rough but important to read.
- The Druidry Handbook by John Michael Greer. 60% through. A very thorough mix on the history of the modern Druid movement, including context that I appreciate as someone from outside the community. I do feel like I want to fight this author on some of his opinions, so I move slowly through it.
- Redwall by Brian Jacques. Like I mentioned, animals are the center of my thoughts right now... why not re-read a classic? I'm reading this as a book club book with some online friends.
Ongoing Series:
- Transliterated by Perpetual Motion. 5/5 shots of espresso: this web novel has me jittering. Fun fact: this novel was originally published on Cohost! I have no idea how I missed it while it was still running. Come for the animal isekai, stay for the wildly impressive science fiction world building and the careful handling of how we communicate both with ourselves and others.
Finished:
RuriDragon volume 1. 4/5 bottles of oolong tea for me: look, I'm a sucker for dragons and transformation. Of course if you handed me a slice of life manga about a teenage girl discovering she's half dragon, I'm going to read it.
Unintended Tendencies by JL Conway. 4 out of 5 cups of carrot juice. Another entry to the Post-Self universe, though by a different author. A beautiful archaeology through the layers of self, and a love letter to the media that helps us survive.
To Be Read:
- Scurry by Mac Smith. Picked this up while out with some friends the weekend of ANE. How could I not? Post apocalyptic rodents sounds like the perfect thing to me.
